Laurie Tomassoni has retired from a 32-year teaching career. She earned a degree in Special Education and Elementary Education at the University of Maryland. Her beginnings were with severely and profoundly handicapped children in Prince George’s County Public Schools. She directed a preschool at her church while raising three children, then went back to teaching full-time in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. She taught all grades in elementary school, with special needs children placed in her classroom. “I have always created programs where parents could learn and be involved with their children’s school activities,” Laurie says. “Back To School Nights, game nights and a program designed for tutoring students and supporting the parents of the Hispanic community at Cresthaven Elementary have been a part of my years of teaching.” Laurie is involved with the children’s program of Downtown Hope, a Christian congregation in Annapolis whose lead pastor is her son, Joey Tomassoni.
