Stronger Families, Stronger Schools

Side by Side was one of three nonprofits highlighted by Prince George’s County Public Schools at a thank-you breakfast Oct. 31. Executive Director Joe Murchison, left, is with schools CEO Dr. Monica Goldson and Joe Fisher of First Generation College Bound, another highlighted nonprofit from Laurel.

Great Start

Side by Side provides its Great Start program at six elementary schools. This is a series of free family nights in English and Spanish for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade parents. The events all include free dinner, engaging children’s activities while parents are in workshops, and Spanish interpretation. Topics include reading, writing, math and behavior.

The partner schools are Bond Mill Elementary, Calverton Elementary, Deerfield Run Elementary, James Harrison Elementary, Laurel Elementary and Scotchtown Hills Elementary. More than 1,500 parents and children attended Great Start family nights in 2018-2019.

Here are our 2019-2020 school year workshop dates.

Side by Side also operates a Booster Club program at our six partner schools. Retired teachers work on reading skills during the school day with kindergartners and first-graders selected by their teachers. One hundred twenty-four students were helped in 2017-2018.

Hispanic outreach

Side by Side has worked with a group of parents at Laurel Elementary School, Padres Unidos por Un Futuro Mejor para Nuestros Hijos, to create a Hispanic parents guide for schools in Prince George’s County. The guide is being distributed to Latino families at six schools.
