You Can Help!

Board of Directors

We also are always looking for volunteers who would like to serve on our Board of Directors.

Side by Side is now accepting applications for its Board!!! Applications are always accepted. Interested candidates should complete this application. For more information about roles and responsibilities, download the Board Position Description and bylaws.

Contact sidebyside@sidebysidelaurel.org with questions.

Side by Side depends on up to 70 community volunteers a year to make our Great Start program possible. Many of our volunteers come from local churches, including Bethany Community Church, First United Methodist Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Our Savior Lutheran Church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.

Volunteers make possible the program by providing the following support:

Tutoring

For the 2020-2021 school year, our special need is for volunteer tutors. We are looking for people who could spend time once or twice a week online (Zoom, Google Meet or other meeting application) or by phone (FaceTime) with a kindergartner or 1st grader. The volunteer tutor would do simple reading activities: review letter sounds, review simple words, read stories, etc.). Training and activities are provided.

Great Start

The following volunteer jobs have been suspended until school buildings reopen:

  • Meal Service: 3-4 volunteers set up the meal (provided by Side by Side), serve the meal to the attending school children and their families, and pack up afterward

  • Registration: 2-3 volunteers (including one paid interpreter or Spanish-speaking volunteer) set up the registration table, check in returning families and register new families, write name tags, and have parents fill out any forms needed for that evening

  • Childcare: 4+ volunteers (including 2 paid childcare workers per school) help set up the activity room and participate with the children in fun learning games while their parents are in workshops

All volunteers need to undergo a fingerprint background check with a provider approved by Prince George’s County Public Schools, and also take three online safety courses.

If you would like to actively join our efforts to strengthen Prince George’s schools and families, you can fill in the following application. We are confident you will be enriched as you enrich others!
